Review 'Tamasha': Ranbir-Deepika weave a good story
Ved & Tara (Deepika ) spent their Corsican vacation play-acting, hiding their actual names & letting go of life's worries. A week full of fun & games; she bids farewell only to realise her heart longs for him.
Some years & tightly-done montages later, Tara travels to Delhi & finds the man she loves. Sadly, a few days into their 'happy' meeting she dismisses him giving reasons that has him shocked.
Shaken & stirred, Ved's reaction to the rejection was odd but at least it gave him the a great deal-needed push to break out of the monotony his executive job comes with.
Ved is lazy & under-confident, leading a robotic life & running a empty race. He's unsure of being the guy he was in Corsica, the one Tara knows & understands.
Single would usually feel sorry for a guy who is misplaced in life & directionless. But Ved isn't sympathy-worthy as he not at all protested touching what was being dumped on him until he got told-off by a aged story-teller that he should be writing his possess tale.
What works for "Tamasha" is Ved, his sympathetic of life & the ability to turn it on its head. What breaks the pulse is non-sequential story.
Just while you're warming up to a heart-broken man trying to hit up a conversation with an auto-rickshaw guy, you're unexpectedly taken back to the hills and its lots of stories.
But then once more, Ali's stories always manifest themselves another way. In this one, he never gives in to the clichés, though a few segments seem slightly contrived.
Kapoor is exceptional. The quickness with which he changes his expression each time he tries to convince himself in the mirror that he's living a lie, is exceptional. He makes Ved look cracked yet believable.
Deepika doesn't get an impressive backstory. She lands a role who globe-trots, stalks & knows Ved is meant for brighter things in life. Still then, she lights up the frame with her charm & impeccable acting chops.
In a nutshell, "Tamasha" knows wherever it's going but takes an needless detour.
