‘Failure of Saawariya was like double-towers falling’ Sanjay Leela Bhansali

For the opening time, filmmaker SLB, who is set to deliver the largest grosser of his career with ‘Bajirao Mastani’, has verbal about the failure of Saawariya & how the industry ridiculed him after the release of the movie.
“(The failure) of Saawariya was like lookalike-towers falling, I still shake under the thought of the experience on the 9th of November”
“But I saw during that phase, I went off to Paris, did the Opera.. even as they were ridiculing me on Filmfare, on the stage, at other award ceremonies. Talking ludicrous things about me”
“But the breakdown of Khamoshi (his 1996 movie with Salman Khan) taught me everything. You have to be burly, your film can collapse, but your mind, intelligence and imagination should by no means collapse” he said.
The circumstances around the let go of Bajirao Mastani were quite alike to the time when Saawariya & Om Shanti Om released. No one in the trade or the media gave Bhansali’s newest magnum opus a chance next to a big film like Dilwale, but the consequences have been dissimilar this time around.
Does Bhansali still regret the clash, allowing for the fact that both movies would have earned a lot more had they released solo.
“The choice to move or not to move was totally with Eros. The day we announced the film, Eros had announced the date of discharge. It was 18th Dec & they were very clear about it. while we announced it in September 2014, I thinking there was too little time to make such a humongous movie. But they said, this is it”
“Then came the statement of Dilwale, 6 months afterward. Shah Rukh & me did meet for a very brief era. We said, let’s try & avoid it. Or see what best we can do. yet if it happens, we will not let it be unclean or mud-slinging” Bhansali said, hinting at the endorsement period of Saawariya & Om Shanti Om, while Shah Rukh famously said “I will destroy them”
“Last time, it was not as of my side at all. I’ve no idea what was occurrence from the other side. I do not want to even revisit it. From my side it was extremely dignified, I never said a word mistaken about people”
“This time we determined that it should not go the dirty way. It should not feel wrong to us. Both films are dissimilar genres, both have dissimilar temperaments, for different audience.. both movies can do well. There are so a lot of films running at the multiplex at the same time”
“Yes, it would have made  lots of difference to us, if Dilwale had not come on the similar day. To me business means a lot, since I have not really given very big hits, Devdas was a big hit, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was blockbuster hit.. but not those 400 crore grossers that we observe today”
Bhansali also praised Shah Rukh & said he’s the superstar of the country, someone who forever gets a big opening.
“SRK being Shah Rukh Khan could come any day and he’s the superstar of the country. He gets that opening. He’s vast in this country, the largest. For me it was a big deal, there was no contrast, maybe I would have done a small more.. but by the grace of god, populace are loving the movie, the numbers are on the rise, there is a lot of common acclaim.. the viewers reaction coming out of theatres is great. The box office is explosion right now. So I sense very good” Bhansali said.
Released in theatres on 18 December, Bajirao Mastani has collected approximately Rs 86 crore in its first week at the box office.
