Here are excerpts from her article –
We’ve all been exposed to big, fat Punjabi marriages (thank you, Yash Chopra!) & Gujju ones (good manners Sanjay Leela Bhansali) and Marwari ones (via the Barjatyas). Hell, a week previous, I even made the nightmarish fault of watching a ‘modern wedding’ in Shaandaar. It afraid the living daylights out of me & I thought I’d be scarred for life. But forget that. I managed to tremble off the trauma & took off to Goa — attractive, serene laid-back, fun-tastic Goa for the “Papaji “of every weddings — half-Punjabi/Sindhi & half Goan Catholic. So, here is the lowdown on a big fat Goan Catholic Punjabi wedding !
The gorgeous ceremony was held at one of the oldest churches there. That morning must’ve seen the strangest throng ever assembled in its history — a fusion of customs & costumes. After all the hugging-shugging & an impromptu “milni” outside the church among the two families, the service began in full attendance & no delays (shocking that Padu & Dhru Maasi & Dolly Aunty finished their make-up on time & that Uncle Albert & Rodrick weren’t keeling over the pews hangover from last night!). At the chapel, through the ceremony, my niece gave me her bouquet to hold & I mock-threatened all my other unmarried nieces that I’d throw it in their way. They went along with it, ducking & hiding, not one of them willing to be the after that to tie the knot.
I said the correct Auntyji words to them I once cringed at: ‘Who’s next at the altar, girls?’ Flashback: It’s one of the mainly annoying things I have had to bear. Single me thronged by aunts who’d gang up to ask the question & taunt, ‘Ab beta, after that teri baari hai?’. At the time, in my heart, I knew it was far from the reality. I was in a traumatic connection with a non-committing friend. In my defense, I’d crack a joke & say that I was still looking for Mr Right while partying with all the Mr Wrongs.
I told the girls to chill. “every time you’re prepared,” I reassured them. I had almost become the Auntyjis I’d unpopular. After the I Do’s were complete, everyone proceeded to more drinking & dancing & dancing & drinking. The dancing reached insane proportions with people dancing on walls and tables (no, truly!).The Bride rocked it in a white wedding gown — the only white marriage where the bride wore choodas & kaleeris (ceremonial bangles & danglers that are the norm at Punjabi weddings) & mangalsutra & sindoor… phew!
Totally shaadi’d out, I returned to Mumbai with the conclusion that no marriage in the world could outdo a large fat Indian wedding. The decadent fun, the play, the madness & the glory, all makes us what we are. Plus let’s not forget, this particular one was a double dose of insanity, the Goans & the Punju/Sindhis! A gorgeous culmination fusion of traditions & customs — this is what my glorious state is about
